Climateprediction.net is the largest experiment to try and produce a forecast of the climate in the 21st century. To do this, we need people around the world to give us time on their computers - time when they have their computers switched on, but are not using them to their full capacity.
\ Whatever about globalwarming, this is certainly making my Macbook get hotter and louder:
Before:\ \ \ \ After:\ \ \ \ And from the software (BOINC) FAQ:\
A computer running BOINC uses more energy than an idle computer. The amount of additional energy depends on several factors.\ \ […]\ \ There may also be an environmental cost. If your electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels, the extra electricity usage produces greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. If this is the case, we recommend that you not leave your computer on just to run BOINC, or that you reduce your overall energy use to compensate.
In other words all those computers are calculating the GHG impact, in part from running all those computers.\ \ Technorati Tags: globalwarming climateprediction energy
