VPSLAND - Just Terrible

Short version:

Bye bye VPSLand, hello Linode.

Long version:

So yesterday VPSLand sent me an email saying:

Your account is past due by one or more invoices so we have suspended your VPS. You will need to login to your account at http://billing.vpsland.com and pay your overdue invoice(s). \ \ Once paid, please reply to us with the transaction details so we can re-enable your VPS. Failure to bring your account up to date within 24 hours will result in account termination.

A response from you is awaited on this.

I visit the billing url given to find that it doesn’t work.

I then try the https version and it does work but has a security certificate that expired in 2009. At this point I wonder if I am being phished, or if VPSLand went out of business in 2009, or both.

Anyway I finally log in, and the billing system claims that 23 invoices haven’t been paid - but they have. I email a reply with attached PDF report from paypal to show that the invoices were up to date.

Next, I get this from VPSLand:

Hello,\ \ We got a blank reply from your side. Please let us know the your response regarding, so that we can assist you.\ \ Awaiting your response.

OK, so their support system must be discarding attachments and doesn’t like whatever format email Apple email sends.

So I resend in plain text, and then I get:

Frank O’Dwyer,\ \ Your email to our support system could not be accepted for ticket creation because the department you've emailed is for registered customers only, and Your email was not recognized as an active customer account.

So their ticket system won’t let me reply to their email saying they’ve suspended my account, because they’ve suspended my account! It looks like their support system is just as good as their billing system.

After a while I figure out if I click on the links in their previous email I can reply to the ticket that way. I paste in the paypal report as plain text (again) and the next reply is:

Hello,\ \ I am escalating your issue to our Sales & Billing Department to get the process expedited.\ \ They will get back to you shortly.

Well, OK.

So I wait a while and then get a number of emails saying:

Hello Frank Odwyer, \ \ Your invoice nnn in the amount of $39.99 has been processed and payment applied. \ \ ————————- \ Transaction ID: XXXXXXX

Now I am panicing and wondering if they are taking these payments again so I check on paypal (they aren’t) and cancel the paypal subscription just to be sure.

Then I get:

Hello.\ \ Thanks for the update. We have manually re-activated your account.\ \ Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

I then reply saying I want to close the account and get rid of the server, which results in:

Frank O’Dwyer,\ \ Your email to our support system could not be accepted for ticket creation because the department you've emailed is for registered customers only, and Your email was not recognized as an active customer account.

LOL!

So I use the previous email link again, reopen the (now closed) ticket and add a new reply saying I want to close the account.

This does work but of course I’ve heard nothing since.

(And of course, though they said they’d suspended my VPS, whatever system does that is just as good as the billing and support systems, so it didn’t work either. So, I had enough time to grab all my data and move it to the linode - something I’d been meaning to do for ages as it is also about half the price of VPSLand and comes recommended)
